Kilter vs. Off-kilter
Kilter – noun – good condition; working order
Off-kilter – adjective – not exactly straight or in perfect balance; not completely well; somewhat ill
I find these two definitions to be quite intriguing. To me, their definitions do not strike me as being exact opposites. Why does kilter not also discuss being in balance? Regardless, I like both words. Which would you rather be? I will playfully cheat and detail the final definition for off-kilter now – unusual or eccentric; unconventional. If I can calculate and determine how to effectively maintain a unique level of unoffensive playfulness1 while still perfecting a personal balance, then that approach seems ideal to me. I want to be the best version of me as fully as I can but never to the detriment of others2. Essentially, I am striving to maximize my lane’s efficacy without hindering any other lanes. I seek that perfect balance both within my own lane and related to all lanes that I interact with.
What or who do you want to be?
What are you seeking??
Are you working towards it???
Are you identifying the imbalances currently within and around you? How can things change otherwise? Will you continually flounder and stall otherdumb? Time will tell.
I suppose another way to look at this balanced approach for life is to be even-keeled. I did not realize it is nautical in origin. I am not a well-versed boat buff at this point in time, as I imagine many others also are not. I chose the idea of lanes because I figure most people are more familiar with driving. That activity is fairly common nowadays. Yet we can see the importance of balance everywhere, on land, at sea, and even in the air. What do you think happens to an airplane that falls out of balance? Have you ever experienced turbulence mid-flight? It is not a pleasant feeling to endure. It can easily disrupt my kilter.
My sugjestion to you for today’s post – reflect and ruminate on what disrupts your kilter. What in your life inhibits you from perfecting your internal balance? Then, what can you do to shift that scale somewhat? There is no need to make sweeping, drastic decisions or changes in one moment or day. However, what is even at least one or two micro-adjustments that you can begin to change today in order start shifting the needle towards balance? How can we be as even-keeled as possible? I wish y’all nothing but the smoothest of possible sailings. May we never drift off-kilter if we can prevent it.
Maybe it is wise. Maybe it is dumb. Time will tell.
