diffident vs. effulgent
diffident – adjective – lacking confidence in one’s own ability, worth, or fitness; timid; shy. Also, restrained or reserved in manner, conduct, etc.
effulgent – adjective – shining forth brilliantly; radiant
When I think about these two words, my mind jumps to indifferent and effusive:
indifferent – adjective – without interest or concern; not caring; apathetic
effusive – adjective – pouring out; overflowing; lacking reserve
One pair represents courage and another comfort or complacency. To me, they seem to be contradictory. Which pair sets you free? Which establishes harmony? Can you see?
My mind also jumps to the Cowardly Lion from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Throughout most of that story, the lion appears quite diffident. However, as a dynamic character who grows and improves, that characteristic does not stay static. Examples of his impromptu bravery abound. In addition, thanks to a mysterious liquid that the wizard gives him, the Cowardly Lion’s courageous effulgence appears by quelling his fears. What I like here is that the lion still adheres to his softer, wholesome veneer; his tough softness perseveres.
Imagine if the Cowardly Lion was too scared to adventure alongside Dorothy. What if he chose to do nothing at all? In my opinion, it does not feel valuable or worthwhile. Here is a sugjestion: reflect on at least a small step or two that you can choose to improve your diffidence. Even if you step slowly, you can feel and see your effulgence glow and grow.
To bring about change, you must not be afraid to take the first step. We will fail when we fail to try.
-Rosa Parks
Courage is only an accumulation of small steps.

Maybe it is wise. Maybe it is dumb. Time will tell. Step onward courageously, y’all :) <3
